5/19/06 - College bound children? Need financial aide?

Sitting down with my financial aid officer was a great help when I learned that my tuition for school would be $9100. I learned that the government was prepared to give me the money I needed to obtain an education. Or at least a portion of it. I received a $4500 pelgrant toward my schooling [ money I did not have to repay]. The remaining amount was paid for through Sallie Mae [a government loan agency]. I got two loans, one of which was a stafford loan. My interest rate was a low 2.7%, the other 3.4%!! There is a minimum monthly payment due of $100. Were there no minimum I would've been paying close to $35 each month. Not bad, eh? Sallie Mae is a wonderful company as well. Their Customer Service is nearly unbeatable. They go out of their way to make sure you're set up with payments you can manage. Even if you need to defer a month or two. Spending that time with my financial aid officer was well worth the effort!

6/7//06 - Student Financial Assistance Bill Signed Into Law

On Friday, I [Jeb Bush] signed HB 795, which creates the First Generation Matching Grant Program and appropriates $6.5 million for state universities for the program. Under the bill, the state will provide matching funds to state universities and community colleges to provide scholarships to students who are the first in their family to attend college and earn a bachelor's degree. HB 1237, signed into law earlier this week, also provides $5 million for community colleges for the program. I thank the members of the Florida Legislature for working with us to ensure students are able to pursue a college education and overcome financial obstacles. Now, students will have an opportunity to pursue and reach their dreams of a higher education.

Hurricane Preparedness from Jeb Bush 5/15/06
I urged all Floridians to prepare for the 2006 Hurricane Season as the state works to instill a 'culture of preparedness' in Florida. Our state has the best emergency response team in the nation, but it is the personal responsibility of each and every Floridian to prepare. Families and businesses that prepare are safer and recover quicker than those who don't plan and don't take action. The 2006 Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1. Veteran's Identity Theft Help Line Instituted
I [Sen. Bill Nelson] am very concerned about the recent theft of personal information stored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. I met with VA Secretary Nicholson within days of the incident, and stressed to him the importance of an immediate investigation by the inspector general to ensure this can never happen again. I am now exploring different legislative options to help ensure that these veterans do not become victims of identity theft. Meanwhile, veterans can call a special help line at the VA to learn more about consumer identity protections. The toll-free number is 1-800-333-4636, and operates from 8 am to 9 pm (EDT) Monday through Saturday.
