Yard & Pond Upkeep...

Here is a sample "letter" of Scott's e-mail service for hints for your yards. I couldn't keep all the layout goodies, but you'll get the gist of it!

Your Grass Type: St. Augustinegrass/Floratam
Your Zip Code: 32244

Fall weather is a great time to "fix up" your lawn.
The fall months present the best time of the year to repair your lawn and eliminate ugly weeds. During the fall, your lawn will benefit from cool nights, more rainfall, and heavier dews, which creates the ideal condition to repair damage from the hot summer months. You can take advantage of this gift from mother nature to thicken your lawn, repair bare spots and eliminate weeds.

Fall Weed & Feed
Apply Scotts® Bonus® S Weed and Feed anytime between now and the first of November. If you applied a fertilizer or a fertilizer/control combination product to your lawn earlier this season, allow 6-8 weeks between feedings.

Watering:
Make sure your lawn receives at least one inch of water per week.

Bare spots:
Repair bare spots in your lawn with Scotts® Patchmaster®.

Quick Tip:
Sharp turns with a mower can cause uneven cutting. Make wide turns or take advantage of sidewalks or driveways, but look out for rocks and debris on the pavement.

Early Fall is one of the best times of the year to control weeds in your lawn.
Most homeowners typically apply weed control in the Spring only. That's because many weeds (like dandelions which bloom as temperatures start to warm up) are more visible. Fall is another excellent time to get rid of weeds because it's the one time of year when your control application, such as Scotts® Bonus® S Weed and Feed, actually does "double duty" for you – it feeds your lawn and controls weeds, such as dollar weed, at the same time. Left untreated, weeds get worse from year to year. Apply Scotts Bonus S now when your lawn could really use a feeding, and clear out most lawn weeds at the same time. It's a win-win for your grass. Just be sure to apply this product when your grass is dry. Watering afterward will help to activate the product.

Application notes for Scotts® Bonus® S Weed and Feed:
For best results, read and follow the directions on the package label carefully.

If you applied a fertilizer or fertilizer control combination product to your lawn earlier this season, allow a minimum of four weeks between feedings (6-8 weeks is recommended).

  • Do not lay sod or sprig for one month after application.
  • Do not seed/overseed for six months after application.
  • Apply when your grass is dry, and water in if the daytime highs are regularly above 80 degrees.
(Note: If you have seeded/overseeded your lawn, you should wait until after the newly seeded grass has been mowed at least twice before applying Bonus S. If you have sprigged or sodded, you can use Bonus S immediately.)

What The Lawn Pro Knows ...
David Mellor, the Director of Grounds for the Boston Red Sox, wrote a book called “Picture Perfect: Mowing Techniques for Lawns, Landscapes, and Sports.” The book is mainly about the art of adding lines to your lawn as you mow. Mellor takes you through all the techniques, but the first part of the book is a crash course in establishing a thick, green, showcase lawn (of course, he mentions Scotts fertilizer in the book). For more on his book and some tips from Mr. Mellor himself, see this month's feature article on our Web site.

What's Next?
We'll send you one more reminder before the end of the year to be sure you've prepared your lawn for winter, and provide you with some other tips for the fall months. In the meantime, we encourage you to check out our Web site for your lawn care needs, and if you have any additional questions or comments, please don't hesitate to send us an e-mail.
